Description - Colchester is the oldest Roman town in Britain, and this is the front of the Norman castle, a grade 1 listed building. It is one of the largest in Europe, and built on the site of the Temple of Emperor Claudius. The view is from the junction of High St and Queen St, looking across Cowdray Crescent, with the Colchester War Memorial on the left and the edge of Hollytrees Museum at the extreme right side of the poster. The view is very similar today, although some of the small trees are now somewhat larger!

Jack Merriott was a landscape and portrait painter, who used both oil and watercolour media. He lectured widely, wrote and illustrated related books, and was vice president of the RI. He produced artwork for quite a number of railway posters.
