Description - A night scene with a cross-channel ferry leaving Southampton on it's journey to France, passing one of the Solent's Palmerston Forts, built in the 1860s. Pears has produced a wonderful representation of moonlight glinting off the gentle wash from the aft of the ferry.

Charles Pears was born in Pontefract, Yorkshire in 1873. He was an official War Artist during both World Wars, and exhibited frequently between the wars. He is best known as a marine painter, and most of his poster work has a marine theme. He was quite prolific for London Underground and all the main-line railway companies, as well as the Empire Marketing Board.
