Title - Essex - St Osyth's Priory - See England By Rail.
Location - St Osyth, Essex, England.
Artist - R. Sharps.
Description - St Osyth's Augustinian Abbey was dissolved in 1539, but many of the monastic buildings survived as part of the country estate of the Darcy and Rivers families and then the Earls of Rochford. The Priory name dates back to the 12th century, and the site was always an important religious site in Essex. The poster view centres on the Priory Gatehouse, the most significant original structure still standing, and dating from the 15th century. Between 1948 and 1980 it was in use as a convalescent home, so the people depicted may well be patients and visitors.
