Title - The Paris Night Ferry - Through Sleeping Car Train - Every Night From Victoria Station London.
Location - Paris, France.
Artist - John Anthony Greene ARCA (1914-1988).
Description - The full Night Ferry journey took 7 hours in the 1950s, seen here in the cutting approaching Paris' Gare Du Nord in early morning sunshine, complete with a green steam locomotive leading the train. The aeriel viewpoint would be from the buildings between Rue Max Dormoy and the railway (or maybe floating above!). Greene's lovely impressionist painting shows the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre on the hill above the colourful houses, apartments and studios of Montmartre's historic area that had been home to many famous artists. This example came from the family of the artist, having been stored since the original commission.
