More About The Artist:
Hans Unger was born in 1915 in Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Germany. He studied poster design in Berlin in 1934-5, and emigrated to South Africa in 1936 where he was a freelance designer until the outbreak of the war. He was in the South African army in North Africa until his capture in 1942 by the Germans at Tobruk, was a prisoner of war in Italy until he escaped, travelling across France and Spain to Portugal, and then to England where he spent a year. He then freelanced in South Africa until 1948, when he moved to London after naturalization.
He founded his own studio, designing memorable posters for London Transport (1950-74), and many other organisations. He became very interested in mosaic-work which led to his setting up the Unger Mosaic Workshop with Eberhard Schulz in 1958, producing stained glass windows and mosaics for many major locations. He died in London in 1975.
