Title - Whitby - Then-Now.
Location - Whitby, Yorkshire, England.
Artist - Andrew Johnson.
Description - A split-scene view of Whitby, firstly in 1768 with Captain Cook setting sail in the Endeavour, and then the contemporary view of a stylish couple talking to an old fisherman, with traditional red-sailed Yorkshire Cobles on the water. In both cases the old town rises up the steep banks from the harbour at the mouth of the River Esk, and the old town church is perched up above overlooking it all. The abbey is not visible in either view, which is unusual for a Whitby poster.
The LNER produced a number of Then and Now posters, to show how they were part of the modernising world of the 1930s.
